February 1, 2023
February is American Heart Month, bringing me the theme for this month’s writing. Here at Community Auctions, we are all about heart and helping those in need. We all think of hearts, love, and Valentine’s Day in February, but there is so much more. February is the month to pay special attention to heart health and to focus on how we share what’s in our hearts with others. In the other February issues, you will be able to read about an incredible pediatric cardiac hospital, and an affordable fitness center to help us all achieve better cardiac health.
In January, all of our hearts skipped a beat when Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin collapsed on the field after being struck in the heart. The blow sent him into cardiac arrest, as the nation helplessly watched. Fortunately, quick medical intervention on the field saved the 24-year-old. We are relieved that he is recovering and has a positive prognosis.
A sobering moment for all of us. Such an unexpected catastrophe for such a young man, yet it brings home to all of us the need to be heart-health aware and to share our hearts with those around us. I have learned to never let an opportunity for a kind word or gesture pass me by.
On a personal note, this is what drew me to Community Auctions after more than 40 years as a public school teacher. I was looking for a second career that would bring me joy and make the world a better place. Community Auctions is just that—- a joyful organization where we strive to help those in need and provide hope.
In 2022 we were able to about $1 million for the many local and national charities we support. To date, we have raised almost $50,000 in the first month of 2023, and only expect that number to grow. Thanks so much to all of you who support us in our mission. Happy February to all of you, and welcome home Damar!
