Community Auctions is proud to recognize Habitat for Humanity of Grayson County in Sherman Texas as our Featured Partner for March 2022.  Community Auctions was able to raise over $15,000 for this branch of Habitat for Humanity over the lifetime of our relationship thus far, and we look forward to seeing that number continue to grow.

Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit housing organization working in local communities across all 50 states and in more than 70 countries around the world.  Habitat’s vision is of a world where everyone has a decent place to live. By building and restoring safe, clean, and healthy housing, Habitat works to eliminate children’s experiences of substandard housing, thereby supporting their growth and development. Research has shown that children of low-income homeowners are 11% more likely to graduate from high school and are 4.5% more likely to complete post-secondary education than children of low-income renters. Homeowners can leverage their housing wealth to finance post-secondary education for their children, especially lower- and moderate-income households. For lower- and moderate-income households, a $10,000 increase in housing wealth raises the probability of college attendance by 14%. Habitat for Humanity enables low-income families to attain affordable housing, which in turn leads to greater educational opportunities. Home isn’t where you’re from, it’s where you find light when all grows dark.

I’m reminded of a story that really brings home for me just how much of that kind of hope we build. Imagine being a 16-year-old girl so embarrassed by your family’s living conditions that you tell friends you live in another home, one up the street from where you actually live, one with a red front door. Imagine being the mother who has just one request when your Habitat application is approved: a red door just like the home your daughter always wished she lived in. Imagine being that mother and daughter, stepping together through that door, your red door, knowing that now so much more is possible. What thresholds these families are crossing! What hope lies behind those doors!
