Cities with American Cancer Society Partnership

At Community Auctions, we are so excited to be able to expand to new cities in our partnership with the American Cancer Society. Below are short descriptions of each city along with an iconic photo representing the region.

 

Akron, OH

Akron is best known as a world-renowned center of polymer research and development.  B.F. Goodrich Tire, The Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, Firestone Tire, and General Tire all led Akron to be known as the Rubber Capital of the World.  Quaker Oats is also located in Akron. Founded in 1825, Akron is also home to several beautiful turn-of-the-century homes and museums, and universities.

Amarillo, TX

Located in the Texas Panhandle, Amarillo is a gateway to the magnificent Palo Duro Canyon State Park.  The iconic Cadillac Ranch is an installation of graffiti-decorated cars, partly buried in a field. With art deco and Spanish Revival buildings, the U.S. Route 66–Sixth Street Historic District is a hub for dining and antiques.

Athens, GA

Nicknamed the Classic City, the college town of Athens is best known as the home to the University of Georgia, whose football team, the Georgia Bulldogs, won the 2021 & 2022 College Football National Championship. Athens is also well known for its beautiful antebellum architecture.

Charleston SC

Charleston, the South Carolina port city founded in 1670, is defined by its cobblestone streets, horse-drawn carriages, and pastel antebellum houses, particularly in the elegant French Quarter and Battery districts. The Battery promenade and Waterfront Park both overlook Charleston Harbor, while Fort Sumter, a federal stronghold where the first shots of the Civil War rang out, lies across the water.

Cleveland,  OH

Designated as a global city by the Globalization and World Cities Research Network, Cleveland is home to several major cultural institutions, including the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, the Cleveland Orchestra, Playhouse Square, and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Des Moines, IA

Des Moines is a major center of the US insurance industry and has a sizable financial services and publishing business base. The city was credited as the “number one spot for U.S. insurance companies” in a Business Wire article and named the third-largest “insurance capital” of the world.

Dubuque, IA

Settlers to this vibrant river city were known for mining and fur trading but later flourished in the industries of button making, boat building, logging, mill working, meat packing, and other heavy industries. Since then, the community has had a long-standing manufacturing sector and a growing service sector

El Paso TX

Today, El Paso is known for its large military presence that is anchored by Fort Bliss, but on the flip side has an up-and-coming culinary scene. With a growing list of top-notch restaurants, museums, and theaters this is a town worth getting to know. Juarez Mexico is a short drive from the border city of El Paso, Texas.

Fayetteville, NC

Fayetteville is a city in North Carolina. The Airborne and Special Operations Museum has exhibits on U.S. Army history and a motion simulator. The riverside Cape Fear Botanical Garden has plant species like camellias and daffodils, plus a children’s garden. The Museum of the Cape Fear Historical Complex explores local cultural heritage and includes Arsenal Park and the 1897 Poe House, a late-Victorian house museum.

Fort Wayne, IN

Fort Wayne is a city in northeastern Indiana, noted for many institutions of higher learning including   Indiana University–Purdue University Fort Wayne (1917)The Foellinger-Freimann Botanical Conservatory has indoor tropical, desert, and showcase gardens, plus outdoor areas. American painting and sculpture are the focus of the Fort Wayne Museum of Art.

Madison, WI

Madison, the capital city of Wisconsin, lies west of Milwaukee. It’s known for the domed Wisconsin State Capitol, which sits on an isthmus between lakes Mendota and Monona. The Wisconsin Historical Museum documents the state’s immigrant and farming history. The city’s paved Capital City State Trail runs past Monona Terrace, a lakefront convention center designed by Frank Lloyd Wright  Madison, WI has a long-standing reputation as one of the best college towns in the country.

Miami, FL

Miami, officially the City of Miami, is a coastal metropolis and the county seat of Miami-Dade County in South Florida. With a population of 442,241 as of the 2020 census, it is the second-most populous city in Florida and the 11th-most populous city in the Southeast. What Is Miami Known For? Miami is known for its strong Cuban Influence, warm weather, pristine beaches, and great diving sites. The city is also home to some famous teams and landmarks such as the Miami Heat, the iconic Miami tower, and the beautiful Everglades National Park.

Midland/Odessa TX

Sitting on the southern edge of the Llano Estacado and located near the center of the Permian Basin oil fields, Midland’s economy has long been focused on petroleum exploration and extraction  Midland and Odessa began as railroad towns and together evolved into a cattle shipping center and regional financial hub. The Permian Basin oil boom in the mid-1920s shifted the economic focus to energy.

New Orleans, LA

New Orleans is a Louisiana city on the Mississippi River, near the Gulf of Mexico. Nicknamed the “Big Easy,” it’s known for its round-the-clock nightlife, vibrant live-music scene, and spicy, singular cuisine reflecting its history as a melting pot of French, African, and American cultures. Embodying its festive spirit is Mardi Gras, the late-winter carnival famed for raucous costumed parades and street parties.

Orange County, CA

Orange County is a region in Southern California. It’s known for Anaheim’s Disneyland Resort, a huge complex of rides, restaurants, and shops. Nearby, in Buena Park, is Knott’s Berry Farm, a large theme park. Cities with surf beaches include Huntington Beach, with its surfing museum. Newport Beach’s boat-filled harbor sits opposite Balboa Peninsula. Laguna Beach has tide pools and oceanfront Crystal Cove State Park

San Diego, CA

San Diego is a city on the Pacific coast of California known for its beaches, parks, and warm climate. Immense Balboa Park is the site of the renowned San Diego Zoo, as well as numerous art galleries, artist studios, museums, and gardens. A deep harbor is home to a large active naval fleet, with the USS Midway, an aircraft-carrier-turned-museum, open to the public.

San Francisco, CA

San Francisco is famous for its Golden Gate Bridge, steep streets, Alcatraz, Cable Cars, and Fisherman’s Wharf.  The thirteenth largest city in the United States is a popular tourist destination. Although founded in 1776, it was the California Gold Rush of 1849 that brought rapid growth to the city transforming it into the major port it remains to this day.

Spokane WA

Spokane is a city in eastern Washington state. It’s home to the Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture, which explores the region’s history through exhibits on art, culture, and Native American heritage. Next door, Tudor-style Campbell House dates from the early 1900s. Vast Riverfront Park, the site of the 1974 World’s Fair, has a sculpture walk. In the park, a cable car offers views over tumbling Spokane Falls.

Tampa, FL

Tampa is a city on Tampa Bay, along Florida’s Gulf Coast. A major business center, it’s also known for its museums and other cultural offerings. Busch Gardens is an African-themed amusement park with thrill rides and animal-viewing areas. The historic Ybor City neighborhood, developed by Cuban and Spanish cigar-factory workers at the turn of the 20th century, is a dining and nightlife destination.

Toledo, OH

The city, on the western tip of Lake Erie,  has long been known for its auto manufacturing and glass industry. But it has a growing reputation as a great place to start a career and make a home. Toledo is home to the famous Mud Hens baseball team, Jeep headquarters, and the world-renowned Toledo Museum of Art, featuring a large collection of art glass.

Tucson, AZ

The city’s central core is a vibrant area with the University of Arizona, Fourth Avenue, and a lively downtown. Stray in any direction from the interior to find endless outdoor space. Saguaro National Park, just outside of Tucson, is lush with giant saguaro cacti and other desert flora and fauna. Tucson is known for its culture and incredible dining, which can be found no matter where you are.

Waco, TX

Waco is a city in central Texas, home to the renowned Baylor University.  By the Brazos River, Cameron Park Zoo is home to lions, otters, and meerkats. The Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum traces the history of the state law enforcement agency and displays vintage badges and weapons. The Dr. Pepper Museum pays homage to the famed, locally invented soft drink. The Waco Mammoth National Monument is a fossil site home to the bones of Columbian mammoths.
